Guide: Choosing Your Heated Towel Rail

Towel rails are relatively easy to choose. Three distinct categories are available:

Conventional Towel Rails
  • Conventional Towel Rails are designed to be plumbed into the original central heating system like any other kind of regular heater. These radiators have the advantage to be cheaper to buy but can only be used when the central heating is on, mostly during the winter.
Electric Towel Rails
  • Electric powered rails are not connected to the central heating, but are filled with heating solution. This option does not connect to your central heating as it connects to your electricity supply only. A fused spur needs to be fitted in your bathroom which will switch the towel rail on and off. Electric towel rails are ideal if you do not want to make pipe work adjustments in your bathroom. We have a dedicated guide about Electric Powered Rails.
Dual Fuel Towel Rails
  • Dual Fuel rails offer the best of both worlds! These are a combination of the two previous towel rails. They can be used as any other heater when the central heating is on, and when the summer time comes, an internal electrical element allows you to warm your bathroom and/or your towels without having to switch the whole central heating on. This type of rail connects to your heating system and to a fused spur also. This is economically the best option and the most popular one.
Modifying Rails
  • 95% of Heated Towel Rails can be easily modified from one option to another. (Note: Our designer range of floor mounted radiators however are difficult to modify and most cannot be changed from the original specification). At Geyser, we can provide you with all the accessories necessary to make these transformations.

Heated Towel Rail FAQs:

What Output Power Do I Need?
  • To choose the output power of Heated Towel Rails you need to consider approx 100 Watt per square metre of bathroom space. This is relatively high due to the fact that towels left to dry on the Heated Towel Rail will absorb some heat. However, people usually tend to choose a Heated Towel Rail due to their dual purpose and the lack of space available in bathrooms.
What Does BTU Stand For?
  • BTU stands for British Thermal Units. The output power of our range of products are always indicated in BTU as well as in Watts. However, if you wish to convert one measure into the other one, just remember that 1 BTU is roughly equal to 3.412 Watts.
Where Should I Place My Heated Towel Rail?
  • Your Heated Towel Rail should be placed on the coldest wall of your bathroom. The wall with the window on it, is often the best one. If this is not possible, try to fix it on one of the external walls of the room. This will ensure a good repetition of the heat throughout the room, which will gain in efficiency.
How Much Energy Do Towel Rails Consume?
  • This factor will depend on 1. Which type of rail you choose (conventional, electric, dual fuel etc), 2. Where it is placed and 3. Its nominal power. However, here is some advice that can help you to reduce your bills:
  • During the winter, it is advised not to completely switch off your electric towel warmer (or to switch it to 'anti-freeze' mode) if you only leave the room for a short period of time (half a day).
  • The consumption of electricity is much greater when rails are started in a very cold room rather than a room with reasonable temperature.
  • It is always recommended to fit a thermostatic valve on your non-electric rail, as this will help you maintain the right temperature in your room, irregardless of other heat sources in the room, such as the shower or bath.
How Do I Protect The Exterior Finish?
  • Never use aerosols, corrosive or hazardous product close to, or on to these products. The towel rail should be cleaned using warm water only on a soft cloth.
